Carol Francis – Members spotlight

In my youth I swam competitively for my county and I had a dream to
represent my country, I matured and the dream remained just that.
That is, until recently, when 2 years ago at the grand old age of 42, I got involved with the wonderful and challenging multisport, that is Triathlon. I was recovering from surgery to my knee as a result of marathon running when the orthopaedic surgeon suggested that I may well need a total knee replacement in 5 years if I kept up the high mileage, I decided it was time for a change! So what I wanted was a challenging sport that played to my existing attributes (strong swimmer, handy runner) so just the bike to master then, and so I entered my novice event in May 2008 at Eton’s Dorney Lakes, completing a 400m swim/20k bike/5k run – I was hooked!

Last season saw big improvements and I won my age-group race in May at the Eton three quarter Olympic distance (800m swim/30.3k bike/ 7.5krun), it was at this point I decided to step up to Olympic distance and competed at Bedford in July which resulted in my winning selection to the Great Britain team and which means that I will represent my country on 4th July in Athlone, Ireland at 1500mswim/ 40kbike/10krun distance, so dreams can come true.

I would whole heartedly encourage anyone to give Tri a Try, it’s a wonderful way to keep fit and the members of Tri Team Wessex will give you a warm welcome and plenty of support, certainly the Wednesday night swim training is a key session for me. Come along and meet us, you’ll find us a friendly bunch, if not a little mad!

Big thanks to Bill, who has compiled a list of dates of races for next year for various race types, inculding Tri, Duathlon and a few fun 10k’s! I have been given a lot of grief for my lack of races this year so I will be picking my events ready for next years season!

Sept – November 2009

Here’s just a few highlights of what some of Tri Team Wessex have been up to throughout the Autumn months!

Tri -Team Wessex and Team GB Duathlete Bill Reed finishes the 2009 season on a high.

Competing in his first full Duathlon season Bill’s gone from strength to strength. Starting the year with the ETU qualifiers at Milton Keynes and Steyning Bill finished strongly and earned a Team GB vest for the ETU Championships in Budapest. “Qualifying to represent GB was a big achievement, I’m really proud to have secured a Team GB place” Bill said.

In September Bill scored a podium age group result in this years London Duathlon. Bill was a creditable second just 13 seconds behind the age group winner. Both led the third place finisher by almost two minutes. Bill’s overall result improved dramatically from 2008 where he was 252nd overall, in 2009 he finished 150th overall, not bad for a 53 year old in a total field of 1861 athletes!

After the race Bill said “I’m really pleased with my time today, would have loved to won, I realised it wasn’t going to happen when I didn’t have a great T1. I improved my times over in every leg of the race though, so overall a great result.”

Continually improving through the year Bill competed at Oulton Park on 4th October to finish the year in sixth spot in the British National Duathlon age group ranking series. After the race Bill said “I’ve had a great 2009 and I’m looking forward to training with Tri-Team Wessex through the winter to start the 2010 season strongly and continue the momentum that I created in 2009″
